Background
Promotional posters featuring Haasan were released in early January 2019, and production began on January 18, 2019. However, the film faced delays due to issues with the created sets and was further pushed back because of the Indian general election in May 2019, in which Haasan’s political party participated. Despite media reports suggesting shelving, shooting resumed post-elections in May 2019. A massive political rally and fight sequence involving Haasan and 2000 junior artists were shot in Bhopal on October 25, 2019, at a cost of ₹40 crore. On October 30, 2019, the team headed to Gwalior for a 12-day shoot schedule, completed within seven days. Afterward, Haasan attended a felicitation ceremony in Chennai and underwent surgery on November 22 to remove an implant from a 2016 accident. Scenes without Haasan were filmed to complete major portions, with plans to shoot his portions post-recovery.
On January 21, 2020, it was reported that Haasan would resume shooting at the EVP Film City in Chennai post-recovery. Due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic, the film’s team decided to change the location from China to Italy. In May 2022, while promoting Vikram, Haasan hinted at the intention to recommence the film once Shankar concludes Game Changer. With the success of Vikram, efforts to revive the project were set in motion. In June 2022, Udhayanidhi Stalin from Red Giant Movies affirmed having discussions with Subaskaran, expressing plans to resume filming soon. However, he did not specify whether Red Giant Movies would be co-producing or distributing the film.
Divison of the Film
Despite initially being conceived as a single film, Udhayanidhi discussed the possibility of a sequel in June 2023. The following month, emerging reports disclosed that the decision to divide the movie into two parts was prompted by the final footage spanning 6 hours. Filming for the second part, titled Indian 3, is currently underway concurrently. The team has already captured approximately 75% of the sequel’s footage. And they have scheduled the shooting of the remaining scenes to take place after Haasan and Shankar fulfill their commitments on upcoming projects. Subsequent reports indicated that filming for the sequel would commence in January 2024, with a planned release on Diwali.
