Siddharth Anand’s cinematic tapestry Fighter blurs the lines between reality and reverie.

In the vast theatre of the sky, where bravery takes center stage, Fighter unveils a gripping saga that pays homage to the Indian Air Force’s indomitable spirit, leaving an indelible mark on the canvas of patriotism. Siddharth Anand’s ‘Fighter’ draws inspiration from Top Gun, setting the stage for a fast-paced narrative. The story revolves around bravery & patriotism and pays tribute to the airborne defenders safeguarding our nation. The film benefits from its attractive cast, spearheaded by the charismatic duo of Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone. The critical question remains: do the actors effectively convey their roles? Or does their focus on appearance hinder ‘Fighter’ from transforming into a genuine action spectacle? Let’s delve into the review to discover the answer.

Fighter Movie Plot Summary

In the high-stakes world of the Indian Air Force, a group of elite aviators, the cream of the crop, unites in response to an impending threat, giving birth to the formidable squadron known as the Air Dragons. “Fighter” intricately weaves a narrative that goes beyond the cockpit, delving into the profound camaraderie and brotherhood shared among these top-notch aviators. As the story unfolds, viewers are taken on a rollercoaster of internal and external battles, witnessing not only the aerial dogfights against external adversaries but also the internal struggles and conflicts faced by the members of Air Dragons.

The film is a tapestry of valour, sacrifice, and the unbreakable bonds forged in the crucible of danger, painting a vivid picture of the lives of those who soar through the skies to protect their country. While the plot is engaging, it falls prey to predictability, lacking the element of surprise that would evoke a sense of awe during significant revelations.

Characters

“Fighter” is a technically impeccable film, seamlessly elevated by the stellar performances of box office heavyweights Deepika Padukone and Hrithik Roshan. The undeniable on-screen chemistry between Roshan and Padukone adds an intriguing layer to the narrative.

Hrithik Roshan as Shamsher Pathania ( The Hero i.e ‘Fighter’)

Hrithik Roshan reunites with Anand after their ‘War’, this time as Shamsher Pathania, Patty. The actor commands the screen with unwavering charisma, showcasing once again his ability to embody characters with utmost conviction. His presence is further enhanced by the allure of his dashing good looks, impeccably complemented by the uniform and bomber jackets. He is a young man who enlists in the Indian Air Force and encounters obstacles on his journey to heroism.

Deepika Padukone as Minal Rathore

As women take to combat in the services Deepika Padukone’s Minal is a woman who has defied patriarchal mindsets, in this case not in the service but in her family. Her athletic frame and subtlety make her the perfect officer. Though there was a lot of hype regarding the lead pairs’ chemistry, it was more like buddy romance, than anything, and thank god for that.

Anil Kapoor as Rocky Singh

With his ever-charismatic presence, Anil Kapoor also contributes a touch of swag to the storyline. The ensemble cast, featuring Karan Singh Grover, Akshay Oberoi, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Talat Aziz, Sanjeev Jaiswal, Rishabh Sawhney, and Ashutosh Rana, contributes to the narrative with their layered performances. Their collective efforts enrich the film with depth and authenticity. All of them were heroes in their own way. Azhar Akhtar, with poker-straight hair and a bloodshot right eye, added a touch of darkness to the ensemble. Anil Kapoor as commanding officer looked brilliant. Everything was perfect and ‘officer-like’ when it came to the way the actors conducted themselves.

Theme & Message

Siddharth Anand delivers a hattrick after War and Pathaan with this magnificent aerial action film. Fighter transcends beyond just aerial combat and adrenaline-pumping excitement. It also delves into profound themes like ambition, perseverance, and the strength of pursuing one’s aspirations. “Fighter” also pays homage to the unwavering spirit of those safeguarding the borders.

Fighter also pushes boundaries, showcasing the country’s growing ambition and technical prowess in the action genre. From inspirational speeches to intense dialogues during aerial combat, the script enhances the overall impact of the narrative. Therefore, with its potential to inspire a new generation of filmmakers, Fighter can elevate Indian cinema to a global platform.

Context & Comparison

Around the same period last year, the director treated us to ‘Pathaan’, a lively espionage tale. The narrative revolved around a seasoned hero reclaiming lost ground and emphatically declaring his enduring presence. The film was enjoyable, thanks to its clever decision not to take itself too seriously. In ‘Fighter,’ however, there’s a noticeable tension between a desire for authenticity in a storyline saturated with conventional tropes. When the camera dwells a bit too much on a pilot, it becomes evident that their fate is sealed. Predictability sets in, with the sacrificial character and the triumphant return of another becoming apparent.

Verdict for ‘Fighter’

For enthusiasts of high-octane action, Fighter is a visual feast. The breathtaking aerial stunts are complemented by meticulously crafted CGI scenes. Together, they elevate the film to a level that will undoubtedly be cherished by action aficionados. The emotional core of the movie, woven into the fabric of the storyline, strikes a chord with every Indian viewer, creating a resonant and impactful viewing experience.
